The title of the story that i choose is "Red faces at Bell Labs".Through my reading,is about Jan Henrik Schon as a young researcher at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. He wrote a papers all about advanced aspect of electronics and had published in Nature and Jornal Science between 1998 and 2001.In 2002,he was admit that he made various mistake in his scientific work. For me,in this situation as scientists they should telling the truth and be honest with their experimental studies. This is because, all the information that they get can be used as a reference to another person.

From the 10 stories, i like the best and will choose the story of 'The Great IQ Scandal'. From this story, sir Cyril Burt as professor of psychology at University College London had study about twins to prove the IQ was mostly inherited. He also architects of much debated 11+ examination. So, it was largest of their study and everyone have accepted about it.But, after he died in 1971, researchers were shocked and no one invented the data. Besides, the argument about how much IQ someone down to their genes and how much down with nurture, remains open. In my opinion, the researches from this professor is the truth and just only he knows about the key of researches into IQ although become confused after he died. But, we can waiting for someone new to proceed about this researches.

From the text "too good to be true"
i choose the "the amazing Tasaday tribe" story. This story is about a researcher Manuel Elizalde who happen to discover a stone age tribe. The tribe was describe to very stone age. Then letter on it was found out that Manuel Elizalde was a fraud, the Tasaday tribe was merely common people which was ask to perform as stone age people.

the reason that i like this story is because it shows what people will do achieve success a fame. Even if it means lying and deceiving others.

The title of the story that i choose is "The great IQ scandal". Based on what i have read from this story, sir Cyril Burt as professor of psychology at University College London do a research to prove the IQ of twins is mostly inherited. Everyone accepted his ideas because his one of the architects.Others researchers were shocked after his died because only his have the key to this reseach. He leave some the data but no one can invented the data. So, there are two argument that unanswered which is how much IQ someone down to their genes and how much to nature. For me, his figure is good but is not complete without any data that can be proof about it. Thus, i agree with anis that waiting for someone to continue this reseach and the argument can be find out.

a) From 10 stories, i choose 'THE ALIEN CORPSE AT ROSWELL' as my best story.
b) From my reading,I can summarize that, the researches of outside are exits in this world even though there is still no news about them. But, at 1947,there is a big new on discovery of alien corpse at Roswell plus with the video of the autopsy of the alien who died on the flying saucer crush. In 1995, the US Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal gives a few factors that the video just a fraud.
c) I like this story because the alien story is always fascinating me. Although there is alien abduction, corpse circle and even the witness of the UFO, they always becomes one big mystery for human to find. And yet human technology is most advance nowadays, still no scientific explanation about them. Whether there are alive or not or just a big agenda serves by government to us nobody knows.

a) From the 10 stories of “Too Good To Be True”, I choose “Something For Nothing” for my best.
b) Based on what I did read, I can summarize that inventors always fantasize to upgrade their invention. In this case, they envision a car that run on water and fusion machine that generate more energy than they use. When Charles Redheffer took the perpetual motion machine to New York in 1813, many people paid a dollar to see it. But, all it never becomes reality so in 1984, the CBS News featured the “energy machine” of Joe Newman that convinces the public does not have to pay electricity bills. But in fact, all that never happened.
c) I like this story because it shows everyone can fantasize and hope they all do come true, but not all be success. However, we should emulate their commitment because they are not easy discouraged. Perhaps, someday, someone managed to make this dream come true.

NUR ATIQAH YAACOB (EA09055) said...

- After went through all the stories, I decided to choose "Something for Nothing".
- In this short story, I found out about a man, Charles Refheffer who have been cheating about a machine that can be generated using water to produced large amount of energy. Since the discovery is the main news at that time, he had managed to raise lots of money from people until some skeptics revealed the truth. The fantasy of inventing that kind of machine continues until today. For me this is too good to be true but hopefully one day we don't have to pay electric bill anymore.
- I like this story because we always keep on dreaming whether it is good or not. But to achieve something, there is no an easy way to go.

a)I chose this story “The great IQ scandal”.

b)Sir Cyril Burt said that human’s intelligence Quotient (IQ) was passed down genetically from our previous generations, after he using twins for his studies. Before he died , there are some rejections when he is proving his theory to others , but the others still accept his figures at the first time just for the reason his study is the largest in his psychology field . After he died, some researchers found that his key research , and his figures that related to the IQ research was deceptive. But there are also some of the researchers discovered the data from the professor was useful because , they claimed that he invented the data and able to foresee his researcher assistants’ names. Until today , there are still arguments about the quantity of IQ that is in human genes , whether is explored or unexplored.

c)IQ is also known as the “Intelligence Quotient”. These two words that make me interested to continue to read the whole passage . I always have a thought about is everyone having the same IQ when coming to this world . If yes , why is it that there are still many tests that we need to take daily after we coming to this world ? Is it mean that the more tests that we took is the equal of how much of the quantity of IQ that we have . If yes that means that the IQ can be exercised or trained by everyone of us . But this text telling me that our IQ is mostly inherited from our parents or our past generations . So the IQ that we had for now is quantized or fixed , we can’t changed it . So what can we do about it for raising or to improve it ? There is a saying said that “practice makes perfect”. That is the reason why many students struggling to so much trying to get the as much A’s as they can to prove themselves that they are the geniuses who equipped with the highest IQ in their brains. I knew the title ‘genius’ is the title that everyone dreamed for , but in this society the geniuses are just smartest one only . We need the all-rounded people, because all-rounded people is the one who can become the leader, lead those the geniuses and help them to fufill their dream such as lead the company earning the money , help the country to become the advanced country . That is the thing that those people full with IQs can’t do . So , my conclusion is the highest IQ that you have does not mean you have the world , because the world not only need the high IQ people , but also the all rounded people.

From all the story of “Too Good to Be True”, I think the story about The Krypton factor is the best story.
This story is about the triumphant team at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California had found the high energy which is energy that comes from krypton particle. Then, they make an announcement that they have found the super heavy elements 116 and also elements 118 as well. The US secretary of energy, Bill Richardson said this is the attractive discovery.
I like this story because it’s all about the history of discovery of krypton elements. Although there are something that bad happen when the krypton elements is found, but it still make this story nice and I’m eager to read it. Actually, krypton is the noble gas and it is a stable gas. It is use in lighting products.

b) the story is about cars that runs on the water and fusion machine just a inventor's fantasy.Charles Redheffer make a lot of money from this idea. from time to time this dream was continued but nothing came in the end.
c) i think this is something like giving hope to someone but in the end we take it back. all of the people in the world are craving for the new technologies that can give benefit to them. too good to be true if something like this invention can be real one.

----The amazing of Tasaday tribe---

from ten's mini stories in "too good to be true", i have choose The amazing of Tasaday tribe

After gone through the mini stories, I have been discover that Manuel Elizalde a Philippine government minister, is a person whom is really nationalism. This is because he has made the area of somewhere in the island of Mindanao a place where he preserve to be a reserve place for the Tasaday tribe. When he persevere the isolate this area he has made the country well knows of its originality. Years after the isolation from civilizations, a journalism came into the tribe they have found that the people has been improving their lives by using clothes and has been living in houses and not in caves anymore. I like this story because Manuel Elizalde has been preserving his countries originality that does not have in others.

From the all the story "Too Good To Be True",the most interesting story for me is "A crop of circles".From the story that i have read, its appear that crops circles have a lot of arguments. Some experts say conclude it as their scientific theory, some say its the earth geomagnetic current, and also some of them said it is cause by directed plasma.Even so,the real cause of it is neither any of this.In fact,a pair of crop circles hoaxers confessed that they are the one that been making the circles. Many still don't believe and convince that those circles are made from something else.I like this story because its shows how people tends to hold their belief on somethings. Its because of that, makes someone more encourage to learn more about something and make new discoveries.

I am very interested in the story of The Corpse aliens at Roswell. According to the research from this story, Alien n UFO is true although we didn't found them for real. It is proved by an incident such as they found the alien corpse at Roswell. They claimed to be a film of an autopsy on an alien, who died when a flying saucer crashed in 1947 in Roswell, New Mexico. However, the US Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal challenged almost everything. This story is not a new story that we never heard before. I myself confused whether to believe it or not, but at the same time I want to know how the actual appearance of aliens if they really exist and whether the alien is dangerous to us.

This activity I must choose one the best from 10 stories, so I choose “ something for nothing”. This story about inventors fantasy how Charles Redheffer had dreamed of producing something that is sometimes almost impossible to produce such as the cars that run on water and fusion machines that generate more energy than they use. He has produced a lot of money, but ultimately it is something that can not be true. Later in 1984, an invention of energy machines that can help people to not pay the electric bill, but the public still receive a bill.

I love this story, because everyone can fantasize though it is a little too much fantasy to become reality.. For me, sometimes the fantasy is to produce a spirit of self to move and successfully. But sometimes it becomes something that is futile because it just gives an empty hope. A person in the world of fantasy as if dreaming the impossible. But is it really impossible to produce. I hope that between fantasy can become reality.

Here, I like what is shared by zuriyati where he also hopes it can become a reality. anyone can be like my fantasy.

From the text “ too good to be true” i choose the “a crop of circle” story. It is about a mysterious crop of circle that found in fields in southern England in the 1970’s. There is a lot of talks about this phenomena and so many arguments about it. Some experts favoured to relate it with “scientific” therories and another suggested “direct plasma” while others said that it is because of vital geomagnetic current through the Earth. And so many rumours had heard around the world about this phenomena but no one can prove how it happened and the real cause of it. That is why i like this story because until now it remains unrevealed and mystery. Perhaps, one day, someone can prove it and explain how this crop of circle occurred.

No easy way, no straight path, and there are free to something of value ...

From the 10 stories I choose "The amazing of Tasaday tribe" This story tells how Manuel Elizalde, a Philippine government minister have found tasaday tribes at Mindanao, in 1971.They spoke a strange language, gathered wild food, used stone tools, lived in
caves, wore leaves for clothes, and settled matters by gentle persuasion. After the year 1986 two journalists in and find this tasaday tribes are living at home, wearing normal clothes and speaking the local dialect. It is not the same as the discovery is done by Manuel Elizalde

I am interested in this story because at school I used to have to learn the history of the tribe tasaday. I want to know about how their findings but it is not true and I can not find the answer to my question of what is true and how they were discovered.

a) I choose story number 9 from "Too Good to be True" list of texts, entitled "Soviet spring of Trofim Lysenko".

b) This story is about a scientist named Trofim Lysenko who claimed that he is the inventor of "vernalization" and but in fact, his idea is just a biggest mistake in Soviet's biology and genetics history. As Lysenko’s claiming is just an old farming technique and to make thing worse the experiment that he conducted is only in his father's farm, in one season and using only one field of wheat. He also said that the characteristics of parents can simply be inherited by the next generations. At the time he made the claiming, the Soviet is in desperation as in 1929, the Soviet is in total chaos because of the death of the leader, Vladimir Lenin and the successor is Joseph Stalin need to make things right in short period of time due to the state of bureaucracy. All these chaos leads to Lysenko’s claiming is quite easy to be accepted without so much further investigation.

c) The reason why I choose this article because since my school days, I loves Biology and History subjects. And fortunately, this article is all about Biology and History. The second reason why I choose this article is because the main title of the whole article is “Too Good to be True” seems to be very interesting article to read in the first place. Besides, it makes me realize two important aspects of life. First one is not to accept anything or everything in life without proper consideration, analysis and investigation as Joseph Stalin just accepting the absurd idea of Trofim Lysenko. The last one is about the idea of Lysenko itself where it stated that the parents can simply be inherited by the children. This shows to me that I have to earn everything in life all by myself without hoping from others even from my own parent. The last but not least reason why I choose this article is because I really fed up with the state of bureaucracy. And this article can show all of us what the state of bureaucracy can affect our beloved country if this matter is not solved quickly. But the fact the matter is, it must be solved sooner rather than later. And not to forget is, this article is number nine and my favourite number is number nine. That’s why I loves this article.

In 1995, US Committee make an investigation to this film on the photographer's, military status, the injuries to alien and also the black and white sequence. Thus, from the investigation, we know that this film contain fake and false information about aliens. The truth about alien still vague. I'm still confused about the presence of the alien. But, I am really interested to know everything about aliens.

Therefore, they become the focus person. Anthropologist trying to get a continuous view, but President Marcos expressed Tasaday reserve and closed 45,000 acres to all visitors. Elezalde Tasaday had been forced by the turbulence that he wants to quickly to be rich person. In 1983 Elezalde have fled the foundation for protecting tasaday. Finally, They were living normal life.
I love this story because I saw the character and seriousness of Manuel Elizalde by any means whatsoever to defend the rights of his country to achieve success.

He took the cars to New York in 1813 and who want to see it they must pay a dollar to see the cars.
But Charles Redheffer seem to keep itself turning about the cars on the water some of people
think that might not be true.So someone who called himself Joe Newman continued the effort from previous
Charles Redheffer about cars on water.
I like this story because maybe someday it will possibly come true. But not all dream can be true without effort so
maybe one person can actually prove that cars can move on water.

This story conclude about the discovery of atomic structure of (krypton)in lead bomb cannot be experimentally that theoretically prove by physicist or scientist. A physician (Victor Ninov) had been fired due to fake data of the discovery. Lastly, this discovery can be prove only by its nature and continuous study. I like this story because its about chemical and must discover carefully with a appropriate experiments and theoretically because anything about chemical cant be misrepresent by someone or anyone.

For activity two for this, I have choose I article which is ‘The alien corpse at Roswell’. Trought my reading about this article, it tell me about the exists of the alien or we called it as UFO(universe flying object). There is evidence that they have research about it which is by television scanning of the film by person who take the video of a flying saucer crashed in 1947 in Roswell, New Mexico, but with the technology, they have found that the film was not truth. Also, this story is not the new story, but I am really confused whether the alien is really existing or not and I am thinking whether alien is dangerous for us if they is really exists.

Sir Cyril Burt is professor of psychology at University College London. He was an educational psychologist who's studies on the heritability of IQ and he spend of 20-year of his career as a school psychological practitioner. Researchers were stuned after Burt death. The article, books, and research by Burt only can solve their minor problems and not the current one. Until now,the argument remainds open. I like this story because I think the historical from past is just the beginning of something, we as a new generation should start continue their masterpiece and spread it away to new generation.

The idea make Elizalde rich from foundation to protect the Tasaday tribe and died in 1997.
c) I love this story because people are willing to cheat to get money, and live in comfort. The lessons of this story is that we should not believe in a thing so easily before we proved it. Easy to believe will harm us, the nation.
d) I like share with Zuriyati because we must have dream to get something in life and hopes it can becomes true.

a) The title of the story that I choose is “A crop of circles”.

b) The idea of this text is about circles mysteriously appeared in southern England and all over the world in the 1970s over fields of grass, barley, oats and wheat. People who encountered it said the circles appeared along with balls of light and high-pitched noises. Rumours had that those circles were created by some unknown vortex, “directed plasma”, geomagnetic current, aliens doing, top secret military experiments or gaseous toxins from the soil. Others claimed that those circles shown some mysterious scientific formulae or religious symbols and even some said they had healing powers. In 1991, there were a pair of hoaxers confessed the circles were man-made and showed the way they faked it, however, not all circles were accepted as cheat and some still believe it invoke strange forces.

c) The reason why I choose this is because it is still unbelievably that someone managed to construct those circles even it is some joke or cheating. If it is man-made, then this proved that the creators(farmers) of circles were very creative.

1. From those paragraphs that I have read, I think the 3 experiences written by Rob Nicol, Graham and Bill were the most disastrous and little bit funny.
2. The first story was about an assignment in the university which he had done it in the evening before the tomorrow morning due to be handed in. Unfortunately the thunderstorm spoiled everything as his computer broke down and he lost all the data in just a second.
The second story was about the carelessness of the one person who was the leader of those trainers of middle executives. He pulled out the power plug without observing those cables that were connected. As a results, all the training group lost their data.
The third story was very surprising on how the monkey spoiled everything that can cause data losses even laptop losses. As the monkey frightened after heard the person shouted, the monkey threw the laptop away. From this story we also can learn on how to deal with monkey if we face them.

3.I myself have experienced data loss but not as terrible or disastrous as the above story. As I am typing the whole essay which about 90 percent done, suddenly the power supply in the house loss and then my computer turn off just like that within a second. All the data must be loss as I didn’t save it earlier.
